1. Offline Captions: animated captions, pay once
A Windows app (Mac coming soon) built for Reels, Shorts and TikTok: four animated word-by-word styles burned in at source resolution, plus an SRT. English runs on NVIDIA Parakeet (7.6% word error rate on our 28-clip benchmark), there is a Roman-script Hinglish mode, and unsure words are flagged yellow so review takes seconds. The web version is free for clips up to 5 minutes and exports MP4, SRT, VTT and TXT. Skip it if you need translation or a full editor.
2. WithSubtitles: free browser editor, $49 desktop
A free in-browser caption editor (around 100 languages, no account) with a $49 one-time desktop app for faster export, batch, saved styles, local fonts, SRT import and a command line. Its own FAQ says desktop transcription quality is the same as the free version, because it uses the same model.
3. Overcaption: free offline subtitles and translation
A free desktop subtitle studio: transcription in about 100 languages, local translation into 50+, SRT/VTT/TXT import and export, and burn-in up to 1080p. Dynamic word-by-word styles, batch, 4K and speaker detection are in Pro at $99 a year or $19 a month.
4. Subtitle Studio: SRT for editors, $69 once
Offline Whisper transcription in 98+ languages with burn-in, bulk conversion and SRT or native Final Cut Pro titles. $69 lifetime for one device. Translation runs through Ollama or an LLM API key you supply.
5. Captixa: the most caption styles
A Windows and Mac app with 108 caption styles and GPU export up to 4K. Transcription runs on local Whisper or, if you add a key, on Groq or OpenAI with the audio sent. The free plan allows 5 videos a day.
6. AirCaption: transcripts and subtitle files
Runs NVIDIA, Cohere or Whisper models on your machine, with a folder queue, hotkey editor and SRT/VTT/TXT or burned-in export. Cloud translation into 80+ languages is opt-in.
7. SubtitleKit: free browser subtitle files
Free, no account: Whisper runs in your browser for 22 languages on files up to 2 GB, then exports SRT, VTT and eight more formats. It makes a subtitle file, not a captioned video, so you burn it in elsewhere.
FAQ
What is the best offline caption app?
For animated short-form captions, Offline Captions or WithSubtitles. For free subtitle files with local translation, Overcaption. For editors who need SRT or Final Cut titles, Subtitle Studio.
Is there a free offline auto caption app?
Yes. Overcaption is free on desktop, SubtitleKit and WithSubtitles are free in the browser, and the Offline Captions web version is free for clips up to 5 minutes.
Are offline caption apps as accurate as cloud ones?
Modern local models are close. On our own benchmark, NVIDIA Parakeet scored 7.6% word error rate on English; published figures for cloud tools are in a similar range, but on different clips, so treat any comparison with care.
