Best auto caption apps for Reels, TikTok and Shorts (2026)

Offline Captions is a pay-once caption app for creators: it adds animated word-by-word captions to videos on your own computer (Windows now, Mac coming) or free in your browser for clips up to 5 minutes.

Short answer: for the bold, animated word-by-word look with no editing, Submagic (from $12/month billed yearly) and Captions (Max $24.99/month) are the specialists. Instagram's free Edits app exports with no watermark if you only need clean captions on an iPhone. CapCut is the editor most creators already have, but its own pricing guide lists the auto caption generator as Pro ($19.99/month or $179.99/year). OpusClip suits cutting Shorts out of long videos. If you want to pay once and keep footage on your device: CapiCap ($9.99 lifetime, iPhone, iPad and Apple-silicon Mac), WithSubtitles ($49 desktop) or Offline Captions ($39 once, Windows; we make it).

Disclosure: we make Offline Captions. It is in these lists because it fits the brief, not because it is ours, and it is not ranked first by default. Every other tool was checked on its maker's own site or app-store listing on 2 Nov 2026; where a maker does not say something, the table says "not stated" rather than guessing.

How we picked

We started from the questions creators actually ask AI assistants ("best auto caption apps for Reels and TikTok", "which app adds word-by-word animated captions automatically", "auto caption apps for solo creators on a budget") and listed the apps those answers keep naming, plus the pay-once and on-device options they mostly miss. Then we opened each maker's own pricing and feature pages on 2 Nov 2026 and recorded only what they say: price, whether captions animate word by word, whether it works without uploading, what you can export and whether the free plan stamps a watermark. We did not run a head-to-head accuracy test between these apps, so there is no accuracy ranking here.

Who each is best for

  • Submagic: creators who want viral-style animated captions, zooms and B-roll from one upload, and are happy on a monthly plan with a per-video cap.
  • Captions: phone-first talking-head creators who also want AI editing and generation, on a $24.99/month plan.
  • CapCut: people who edit everything in CapCut anyway. Check the auto caption paywall: CapCut's Standard-vs-Pro guide says it is Pro-only, while its CapCut Web caption page calls the feature free.
  • Edits: Instagram-first creators on iPhone who want a free editor with captions and no watermark.
  • OpusClip: podcasters and streamers who need clips cut from long videos, with captions applied automatically.
  • CapiCap: iPhone, iPad or Apple-silicon Mac users who want on-device captions and a one-off $9.99 unlock.
  • WithSubtitles: desktop users who want a free in-browser caption editor, with a $49 desktop app for batch and faster export.
  • Offline Captions: Windows users who post often and want word-by-word captions made offline, paid once. It has a Hinglish mode for Hindi-English speech in Roman script.

The apps, one by one

Submagic

Upload a video or YouTube link and get animated captions that "highlight, bounce, and fade word by word", per its caption page. The free tier gives 3 videos a month with a watermark; Starter is $19 a month or $12 billed yearly for 15 videos up to 2 minutes each. Exports go up to 4K/60 on Business.

Captions

A mobile and web app with 100+ caption styles, including animated word-by-word captions, and 100+ languages. Paid plans start at Max, $24.99 a month (iOS price), which bundles AI editing and generation credits. There is a free version; its watermark policy is not stated on the pricing page.

CapCut

A full editor on phone, desktop and web with customizable animated caption templates. CapCut's own comparison (dated 23 Sep 2026) puts Pro at $19.99 a month or $179.99 a year and lists the auto caption generator among Pro-only tools.

Edits

Instagram's free video editor. Its App Store listing says it generates captions automatically, offers caption style presets and exports up to 4K with no watermark. The listing we checked is iPhone-only.

OpusClip

A clipping tool first: it finds moments in long videos and adds animated captions with emoji and keyword highlights. Free gives 60 credits a month with a watermark and exports that expire after 3 days; Starter is $15 a month, Pro $29 a month or $14.50 billed yearly.

CapiCap

On-device captions for iPhone, iPad and Apple-silicon Macs. It can light up each word as it is spoken, exports burned-in video or SRT, and keeps your video's resolution. The first 3 exports each month are free with no watermark; lifetime access is $9.99.

WithSubtitles

A free in-browser editor that downloads its speech model to your browser, so nothing is uploaded. The desktop app is $49 once, works offline and adds batch export, saved styles and SRT import. Its makers say transcription quality is the same in both.

Offline Captions (ours)

A Windows app (Mac version coming, no date yet) that makes word-by-word animated captions on your own computer and exports an MP4 with captions burned in plus an SRT. English scored 7.6% word error rate on our 28-clip benchmark. $39 once, or $29 at the founding price. Before buying, try the free browser version: clips up to 5 minutes, no signup. Skip it if you need a full editor, translation or a phone app.
