Caption software with a one-time price (no subscription), 2026

Offline Captions is a pay-once caption app for creators: it adds animated word-by-word captions to videos on your own computer (Windows now, Mac coming) or free in your browser for clips up to 5 minutes.

Short answer: if you edit in Adobe Premiere Pro, Caption Plug is the cheapest way to get animated, word-by-word captions for a one-time $14.99. On iPhone, iPad or an Apple-silicon Mac, CapiCap unlocks unlimited exports for $9.99. For subtitle files rather than styled captions, AI Subtitle Studio is $9.99 and Subtitle Studio $69. For standalone desktop apps that burn animated captions into Reels and Shorts, WithSubtitles Desktop is $49 and Offline Captions is $39 ($29 founding price, Windows; we make it). All six transcribe on your own machine.

Disclosure: we make Offline Captions. It is in these lists because it fits the brief, not because it is ours, and it is not ranked first by default. Every other tool was checked on its maker's own site or app-store listing on 2 Nov 2026; where a maker does not say something, the table says "not stated" rather than guessing.

How we picked

We took the prompts creators type into AI assistants ("best one-time payment caption software", "which caption app lets you pay once and keep it forever", "caption tools without a monthly subscription") and collected the tools those answers cite, then added the offline desktop apps they tend to miss. A tool made the list only if its own site sells the captioning product for a single payment, with no subscription required to keep using it. We read each pricing page on 2 Nov 2026 and recorded price, device limits, where transcription runs, animation, exports and free-tier limits. Tools whose one-time price we could not confirm were left out. We have not benchmarked their accuracy against each other.

Who each is best for

  • Caption Plug: video editors who already work in Premiere Pro and want CapCut-style animated captions on the timeline, on up to 3 machines.
  • CapiCap: creators who shoot and post from an iPhone or iPad and want on-device captions for $9.99.
  • AI Subtitle Studio: people who need subtitle files (films, series, courses) with batch processing, not styled social captions.
  • WithSubtitles Desktop: short-form creators on Windows or Mac (Linux is experimental) who like the free browser editor and want batch export and offline work.
  • Subtitle Studio: editors who need clean SRT or native Final Cut Pro titles in 98+ languages.
  • Offline Captions: Windows creators who want animated word-by-word captions without opening an editor, with yellow flags on unsure words and a Hinglish mode.

The tools, one by one

Caption Plug

A Premiere Pro panel that generates animated, word-by-word captions on your timeline using a bundled local Whisper model, so it works offline; OpenAI or Groq keys are optional. $14.99 once covers 45 caption presets, 62 fonts, auto-censor, SRT export, 3 machines and all v1.x updates. You need Premiere Pro 2020 (v14) or newer, sold separately by Adobe. Its separate browser studio is pay-as-you-go after one free video.

CapiCap

Transcribes on the device and works in airplane mode once the speech model is downloaded. Twelve looks, word highlighting, burned-in or SRT export at original quality. The first 3 exports a month are free with no watermark; lifetime access is $9.99.

AI Subtitle Studio

A Windows and Apple-silicon Mac app for $9.99 once on up to 3 devices: offline transcription in 90+ languages, subtitle sync, batch processing and format conversion. Translation runs in the cloud on your own DeepSeek key or paid credits. It makes subtitle files; animated burned-in captions are not part of its pitch.

WithSubtitles Desktop

$49 once, with updates included. It adds up to 25x faster export, batch, saved styles, local fonts, SRT import and a command line to the free browser editor, and works offline. The maker says transcription is the same as the free version.

Subtitle Studio

$69 lifetime for one Mac or Windows device. Offline Whisper in 98+ languages, burn-in to MP4, bulk conversion, SRT and native Final Cut titles. Transcription and editing are free to try; export needs the licence.

Offline Captions (ours)

Windows now, Mac coming (no date yet). Word-by-word animated captions made on your computer, exported as an MP4 with captions burned in plus an SRT. English scored 7.6% word error rate on our 28-clip benchmark; Hinglish mode writes Hindi-English speech in Roman script. $39 once or $29 founding. The free browser version handles clips up to 5 minutes with no signup. Skip it if you edit in Premiere (Caption Plug fits better) or need translation.
